Scholarship Information
Listed below are the local scholarships that are available to our graduating seniors and the information pertaining to those scholarships. Applications for these scholarships will be available beginning February 1 in the Commons Area (or by clicking the link below). All scholarships are due back by March 15th, unless otherwise noted on the application. Students are responsible for attaching a transcript and ACT/SAT scores.
Scholarships may be discontinued or amounts varied at any given time per committee discretion.

Braxton County American Legion Scholarship (Post 33) | Awarded to a senior with at least a 3.0 GPA and has a family member who is/was a veteran of the Armed Forces. $1,000 |
Braxton County Rotary Club Scholarship | Awarded annually and renewable, this scholarship is given based on a completed application and a well-written essay on "Service Above Self." |
Braxton County Community Educational Outreach Service | A minimum of $500, this scholarship is awarded to a deserving senior with at least a 2.5 GPA. |
Burnsville Lions Club Scholarship | This $500 scholarship is awarded to a senior from the Burnsville area. Applications are distributed by the Burnsville Lions Club.) |
Byrl H. Frame Scholarship Fund | The Byrl H. Frame Scholarship is $1,000 renewable for up to four years for a total of $4000. Recipient must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA. |
Carl & Eunice McCune Memorial | Established by the Gassaway United Methodist Church, this one-time $1,000 award is given to a deserving senior with preference going to a member of the Gassaway United Methodist Church. |
David L. Jack "Baby Dave" and "Bob Hall" Memorial | A minimum of $400, this scholarship is awarded to a senior who plans to attend a vocational trade school. |
Dencil M. Shaver Trust Fund | The Dencil M. Shaver Trust Fund is a $1,000 scholarship awarded to a senior with plans to major in electrical trades/electrical engineering. No application necessary. Please see the electrical teacher for a recommendation letter. |
Dr. Foley Scholarship | This $500 scholarship is awarded to one BCHS senior going into the field of science. No application necessary. The recipient is chosen by the Senior Counselor and the Principal. A letter of recommendation is submitted by the Principal to Dr. Foley. |
Dr. George T. Hoylman Scholarship | The Dr. George T. Hoylman Scholarship is $500 andn awarded to a deserving senior planning to attend a 2 or 4-year college, trade or technical school. Recipient must be registered through an organization of Boy Scouts of America. |
Emerich Charitable Trust Fund Scholarship | Awarded to one or more seniors planning to attend a WV college or university, the amount and number of recipients varies yearly. This scholarship is renewable provided the post graduate applies for renewal. Due March 1. |
Evelyn Post Scholarship | Awarded $500 annually, this scholarship is renewable for four years provided the recipient maintains full-time status and a minimum 3.0 GPA. |
Gassaway High School Alumni Scholarship | This scholarship is awarded to a senior planning to attend an accredited WV college and 3.5 or higher GPA. Recipient must live in Gassaway postal delivery area or have a parent/grandparent that graduated from Gassaway High School. |
Gassaway Lions Club | Established in 2016, this one-time $1,00 award is given to a graduating senior who is a resident of Gassaway and is planning on attending a two or four year college or trade school. |
General Federation of Women's Club | The General Federation of Women's Club offers a scholarship in the amount of $1,000 with $500 awarded each semester of enrollment. May not be available every year. |
H.G. and Jessie Robinson Scholarship | This $1,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving senior with a minimum 2.5 GPA. |
Hunter Lemon Scholarship | Established in 2013 by family, friends and the Braxton County Community, this scholarship honors the memory of Hunter Lemon. The amount varies at the committee's discretion. |
Isaac Stalnaker Scholarship | The Isaac Stalnaker Scholarship is $500 and awarded annually to a senior enrolling in a vocational or trade school, two or four year program. |
James B. Merzouk Scholarship | Established in 2012 in memory of BCHS Foreign Language teaher, this one-time award goes to a deserving senior who plans on majoring in foreign language with a determination to succeed in education and community. |
Jane Palmer Memorial Scholarship | In memory of Jane, who dedicated 40 years of her life as an educator serving in capacities of teacher, vocational director, vice principal, principal and curriculum director, this scholarship awards a one-time $1,000. |
Janet Spangler McClung Scholarship (Sutton Lions) | The Janet Spangler McClung Scholarship (Sutton Lions Club) is $600 and awarded to a student planning to attend a 2-4 year WV college, business, beauty, trade or technical school. |
Jason Tharp Memorial Scholarship | The Jason Tharp Memorial Scholarship is $1,000 awarded to a senior planning to attend a 2-4 year college, technical or vocational school, preferably majoring in the arts. |
John Stahlman Memorial Scholarship | The John Stahlman Memorial Scholarship is $1,000 awarded to a senior planning to attend a 2-4 year technical program such as mechanics or agriculture studies. |
Kanawha Alumni Association Scholarship | The Kanawha Alumni Scholarship is $500 and awarded to a senior living in the Burnsville area planning to attend a 2-4 year college or trade shool in WV. Recipient must be present at the annual Kanawha Alumni Association meeting held on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. Applications distributed by the Kanawha Alumni Association. |
Kristy Johnson Memorial Scholarship | The Kristy Johnson Scholarship is awarded annually in the amount of $250-500 to a senior planning to pursue a degree in education. Must have at least a 2.5 GPA. |
Little Birch Elementary/American Red Cross | The Little Birch Elementary/American Red Cross Bood Drive Partnership Scholarship was established in 2014. The amount varies annually. |
Little General Store | The Little General Scholarship is offered statewide, but can be awarded to a BCHS senior. Applications are available online or from your counselor. Applications must be mailed to the Becklkey Little General Office listed on the application. |
Margaret Hoover Scholarship | The Margaret Hoover Scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving senior with at least a 2.5 GPA. The amount of the scholarship is $500. |
Martha B. Taylor Scholarship | The Martha B. Taylor Scholarship is $500 awarded to a senior from the Burnsville area. No application necessary. |
Ronald K. (Tony) Shuman Scholarship | The Ronald K. (Tony) Shuman Scholarship is awarded to a senior with a 3.0 or higher GPA, major in education or is the son/daughter of an educator, attend a four-year college; demonstrates involvement in co-curricular and extracurricular activities. |
Rose Marie Robinson Scholarship | The Rose Marie Robinson Scholarship is a one-time award of $1,000 to a senior planning to major in Performing Arts/Musical Education with a focus on voice/vocal education. Must have 2.5 or above GPA and plans on attending a four year college. |
Roy & Barbara Huffman Scholarship | The Roy and Barbara Huffman Scholarship is $2,500 awarded to a senior planning to attend Marshall University preferable in the College of Business, but this is not mandatory. |
Sutton High School Alumni Association Scholarship | The Sutton HS Alumni Scholarship is awarded to two BCHS seniors ($500 each). Applicant must be of ancestral lineage (parent, grandparent, etc. who attended or graduated from SHS), at least 2.5 GPA, and plan to attend a WV college for a 2-4 year degree. |
Sutton Moose Lodge #825 Scholarship | The Sutton Moose Lodge #825 Scholarship is awarded annually to deserving senior with at least a 2.5 GPA. The amount of the scholarship is $1,000. |
Tiffany Jackson Memorial Scholarship | In memory of Tiffany Jackson, this scholarship is awarded to a senior who plans to attend an accredited college or university. Recipient must have association with the promotion of the horse industry. |
